Copilot in SharePoint Reaches General Availability
Copilot in SharePoint began rolling out as generally available on September 30, and the October "What's new" update from the SharePoint team marks the shift from preview to a supported, broadly available experience. For most organizations this means Copilot will increasingly appear inside sites, pages, and libraries without any special opt-in, so the quality of your content and permissions now directly shapes the quality of the answers users get.
The Microsoft 365 roadmap also lists an AI input widget and content preview in Copilot targeted for November 2026. It will show saved and unsaved preview content next to the chat and let users interact with HTML forms and confirm responses. In addition, an AI overview for SharePoint News posts has launched in the SharePoint app for Teams (Viva Connections), offering an AI-generated audio summary of News posts.
What to do: Audit site permissions and clean up overshared content before Copilot surfaces it, and write a short internal guide on good prompting for Copilot in SharePoint.
Redesigned SharePoint Mobile App Targeted for October
Microsoft added a redesign of the SharePoint mobile app for iOS and Android to the roadmap (RM571200) on September 16, with general availability targeted for October 2026 across Worldwide, GCC, GCC High, and DoD. A personalized Discover view that combines files, sites, people, and news replaces the current Find, News, and Me tabs, alongside better site browsing, in-app file previews, refreshed news and search, dark mode, and improved performance.
No admin controls have been announced, so the change will arrive through normal app updates and timing may vary by tenant and device. Global navigation menus are still not supported in the mobile app, and it is not yet clear how in-app file previews interact with sensitivity labels or Conditional Access.
What to do: Update help content that references the Find, News, and Me tabs, test pages and logos in dark mode, and add quick links to home pages as a workaround for missing global navigation.
News, Sharing, and Governance Roadmap Items
Two items are rolling out now. Cross-posting SharePoint News to Engage lets authors distribute posts to an Engage community or storyline, replacing the News comments module with the Engage conversation module so discussion lives in one thread. The next generation of file and folder sharing introduces a new "hero link" that controls access to files whether they are copied, emailed, or shared from the browser.
Still in development, a Governance Reviews Dashboard for Site Owners (currently in Private Preview, targeted for November 2026) gives owners a single view of pending inactivity, ownership, and attestation reviews with due dates, replacing multiple governance emails. Separately, a new Microsoft Purview DSPM experience targeted for January 2027 adds bulk disabling of overshared SharePoint links as a remediation action.
What to do: Brief site owners on the upcoming governance reviews and test the new sharing link behavior with a pilot group before it reaches everyone.
Retirements and Deadlines to Track
Several retirements land close together. One-Time Passcode authentication for external sharing changes in October 2026, so older "specific people" links could fail silently; pre-create guest accounts or re-share affected content. The Teams live chat integration for customer messaging was scheduled to stop on October 5, and Viva Connections multi-home-site management is moving to the SharePoint admin center around now.
Looking ahead, Restricted SharePoint Search fully retires on January 31, 2027, and standalone SharePoint Online and OneDrive Plan 1 and 2 renewals end in January 2027. Organizations relying on either should plan replacements now rather than at renewal time.
What to do: Identify older external sharing links and standalone plan renewals on your calendar, and replace Restricted SharePoint Search with real content governance.
SharePoint Framework (SPFx) Update
SPFx 1.24 Beta 5 shipped on September 23 with updates to the Copilot UX components public preview, more predictable default display modes in the Copilot canvas, declarative agent manifest validation at build time, new components scaffolded with manifest v1.8, and React 18 as the out-of-the-box version. General availability of 1.24, including Copilot UX components and Node.js 24 and 26 support, is planned for October 2026.
Further out, SPFx 1.25 (December 2026 or January 2027) is planned to bring the SPFx CLI to GA, replacing the Yeoman generator, plus navigation customizers for overriding navigation nodes. Roadmap items can change.
What to do: Have developers test solutions against 1.24 Beta 5 and React 18 in a non-production tenant before GA.
