SharePoint Online Weekly Update — October 5, 2026

Copilot in SharePoint began general availability on September 30, and Microsoft will retire the PowerShell controls for Copilot availability on November 1 while enabling it on all sites by default. The SharePoint Page Agent (Frontier) preview is also being retired, and SPFx 1.24 GA is expected this month.

Copilot in SharePoint Reaches General Availability

Copilot in SharePoint began rolling out as generally available on September 30, 2026, moving the experience out of preview and into mainstream tenants. Microsoft's monthly "What's new in Copilot in SharePoint" post for October marks the milestone, and the rollout will reach tenants progressively rather than all at once.

For organizations that have been piloting Copilot on a handful of sites, GA changes the conversation from "should we try it" to "how do we govern it at scale." Authoring, summarization, and content-discovery entry points will appear in more places, so the questions that matter are which sites should expose AI features, which content should be discoverable, and how authors are trained to review AI-generated output before publishing.

What to do: Review the Copilot in SharePoint GA announcement against your tenant's rollout status, identify a short list of sites where AI features should be limited, and brief your site owners on what authors will see.

PowerShell Copilot Controls Retire November 1

Microsoft has announced that it plans to enable Copilot in SharePoint on all sites and to retire the PowerShell controls used to manage its availability. Existing settings continue to be honored until November 1, 2026, after which they will no longer apply. The affected parameters are KnowledgeAgentScope, KnowledgeAgentSelectedSitesList, and KnowledgeAgentSelectedSitesListOperation.

Tenants that configured these with values such as ExcludeSelectedSites, IncludeSelectedSites, or NoSites are the most exposed, because a site you deliberately excluded today could have Copilot switched on after the deadline. The replacement controls are Site AI settings, which govern Copilot availability per site, and Restricted Content Discovery, which limits content discovery and removes AI entry points such as Copilot buttons and AI actions from specific sites.

What to do: Before November 1, run a script to export your current KnowledgeAgentScope configuration, map each excluded site to the equivalent Site AI setting or Restricted Content Discovery policy, and apply them while the old settings are still honored.

SharePoint Page Agent (Frontier) Retires, FAQ Authoring Moves to Copilot

Microsoft is retiring the SharePoint Page Agent (Frontier) preview, tracked as message center item MC1481325. Retirement begins in mid-October 2026 and completes by mid-November. Users will no longer start page or news post creation through this Microsoft 365 Copilot integration, and Copilot in SharePoint becomes the replacement authoring path. Existing content stays accessible with its current permissions and lifecycle policies, so no migration is required.

A related change appears on the October roadmap: AI-powered FAQ generation is moving from the FAQ web part into the Copilot experience in SharePoint. Existing FAQ content keeps working, but new AI-generated FAQs will be created through Copilot. Together, these shifts consolidate AI authoring in one place, which simplifies governance but changes author workflows.

What to do: Notify authors about the Page Agent timeline, update internal training and support documentation that references it, and confirm your review process for AI-generated pages and FAQs still fits the new workflow.

SharePoint Framework: SPFx 1.24 GA Expected This Month

The SharePoint Framework (SPFx) roadmap update for September shows SPFx 1.24 Beta 5 with a refreshed public preview of the Copilot UX components and React 18 support. General availability of SPFx 1.24 is planned for October 2026, bringing Copilot UX components to GA, full React 18 support, and compatibility with Node.js 24 and 26.

Looking further out, SPFx 1.25 is expected in December 2026 or January 2027 with the SPFx CLI reaching general availability, replacing the Yeoman generator, along with navigation customizers for component-based navigation overrides. Teams that maintain custom solutions should plan for the generator transition and the React and Node.js version changes.

What to do: Test your existing solutions against the 1.24 beta on React 18 and a supported Node.js version now, and start planning the move from the Yeoman generator to the SPFx CLI.

Roadmap Watch: SharePoint Mobile App Redesign

The October Microsoft 365 roadmap roundup highlights a redesign of the SharePoint mobile app, with personalized discovery, improved file previews, enhanced search, modernized navigation, and dark mode support. A Copilot prompt gallery, a curated set of prompts for content creation, document analysis, and information discovery, is also on the roadmap for OneDrive users.

These are incremental, but they matter for adoption: a better mobile experience and ready-made prompts lower the barrier for employees who are not yet comfortable with AI tools, which is where prompt training and internal skills pay off.

What to do: Add the mobile redesign to your change-communication calendar and consider building an internal prompt library so employees have organization-specific examples alongside Microsoft's gallery.
