Consolidating these into one app is an admission that fragmentation was becoming the adoption bottleneck — people cannot use what they cannot find. It also signals where Microsoft believes the value sits: not in any single assistant, but in a platform that routes a request to the right model and the right agent automatically.

Sonnet 5 joins Claude Opus 5 — added in late July — and OpenAI's GPT-5.5 family in a lineup where Cowork and other surfaces increasingly pick the model that fits the task rather than forcing the user to choose. In practice that means visual and document-heavy work like PowerPoint generation can route to a model tuned for it, while deep research with citations routes elsewhere.
The context for all of this is scale. Microsoft disclosed that Microsoft 365 Copilot has crossed 30 million paid seats, a milestone that reframes every governance and change-management conversation. At that volume, model choice is no longer an abstract preference — it becomes a question of which model handled which decision, on whose data, with what audit trail. Offering multiple frontier models is a genuine capability advantage, but it also multiplies the number of things an organization has to be able to explain after the fact.

The regulatory backdrop makes this concrete rather than theoretical: the EU AI Act's high-risk obligations take effect this August, which means "which model handled this decision, on what data, authorized by whom" is becoming a compliance question, not just an engineering one. The organizations that thrive with agentic AI will be the ones that treated governance as a first-class design input, not a cleanup step.
